Australia Day Foods: What’s Safe and Unsafe for Pets

Jan 21, 2025

Australia Day is the perfect time to gather with family and friends, fire up the barbecue, and enjoy the sunshine with some classic Aussie dishes. But while you’re busy entertaining, it’s essential to keep your pets’ safety in mind. Cats and dogs are naturally curious, and the smells of sizzling sausages and fresh pavlova can be too tempting to resist. To ensure everyone, including your furry friends, has a great day, here’s a guide to which foods are safe for pets.

Foods That Are Harmful to Pets

Chocolate
A classic dessert ingredient, chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, and, in severe cases, seizures.

Onions and Garlic
Found in sausages, marinades, and side dishes, onions and garlic can damage red blood cells in both cats and dogs, leading to anemia.

Alcohol
Pets should never consume alcohol, even in small amounts. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, decreased coordination, and, in extreme cases, respiratory failure.

Cooked Bones
While it might seem natural to toss your dog a cooked bone, they can splinter easily, leading to choking or internal injuries.

Avocado
Common in dips like guacamole, avocado contains persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs and is particularly toxic to birds.

Grapes and Raisins
Often found in fruit platters or desserts, grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs and cats.

Fatty and Greasy Foods
Foods like sausages, fried snacks, and fatty cuts of meat can lead to pancreatitis in pets, a serious and painful condition.

Macadamia Nuts
Found in many Australian desserts, macadamia nuts are highly toxic to dogs, causing weakness, vomiting, and tremors.

Tips to Keep Pets Safe

Create a Pet-Free Zone: Set up a comfortable and quiet area indoors where your pets can relax away from the noise and smells of the party. Include their favourite bedding, toys, and fresh water to keep them content.

Supervise Your Pets: If your pets are mingling with guests, designate a family member or friend to monitor them closely to ensure they aren’t getting into food or mischief. This is especially important for curious cats and food-motivated dogs.

Provide Pet-Safe Treats: Offer your pets their own special snacks, such as store-bought pet treats or safe fruits in moderation like blueberries, watermelon (seedless), or apple slices (without seeds). This way, they won’t feel left out of the festivities.

Secure Food and Trash: Make sure all food items are placed out of your pets’ reach, including desserts and leftovers. Secure your trash bins with tight-fitting lids to prevent your pets from scavenging and potentially ingesting harmful items.

Plan for Breaks: Large gatherings can be overwhelming for some pets. Make time to check on them, offer reassurance, or take your dog for a quick walk to calm their nerves if needed.

If you suspect your pet has ingested something harmful, contact your vet immediately or call the Australian Animal Poisons Helpline at 1300 869 738. Acting quickly can make all the difference in ensuring your pet’s safety and well-being.
